When fixing the errors and simultaneously optimizing keywords on the page— for example, by implementing a missing H1 tag— I get double the benefit: I not only removed an error that is holding my website back, I also made the on-page SEO more relevant.

For beginners just starting with SEO, the most important tip is to focus on creating high-quality, relevant content that answers the questions your target audience is searching for. Google prioritizes content that is valuable and useful, so understanding your audience's needs and addressing those in your content is a game-changer.
One actionable step you can take today is to optimize your title tags and meta descriptions. These are the first things users see in search results, and making them clear, keyword-rich, and compelling can immediately improve your click-through rates. My best tip is to focus on a single topic per page. Don't cluster up five different services on one page; make a separate page for each one. This gives you five more opportunities to rank instead of just one.

Use Plugins and Make Regular Backups
SEO perhaps looks easy; I have learned the hard way that it isn't. Now, don't let this scare you. There are many videos on YouTube available, which give a lot of insights and tips on how to optimize your website. Via Linkedin, you will find a lot of communities related to SEO, and much is shared.
Above was a brief general introduction. As for the tip, or better, I have three.
First, when you start building your website, you will start using plugins or add-ons, which can assist in building or optimizing your content for SEO, like speed-optimization and cache plugins. The plugin you should download and activate first is WP Staging or a similar one. Why? This plugin allows you to make daily backups, which you can store locally or in the cloud. From my own experience, I had to build my pages several times over again after installing a plugin and deleting it again. The website, mainly layout and colors, was disrupted and not restored back to its original state after deleting the plugin. It happened twice, and then I installed the WP Staging plugin. Next to backing up your website, you can create a staging (clone) website. There, you can try different plugins or any other things, like adjusting htaccess or functions.php files in the root folder. If something goes wrong, you delete the staging website, create a new one, and try again.
Secondly, make notes of every change you make so you can refer back to them. Again, also out of experience, I did not do so initially. Make notes not only from changes in php or other files but also from plugin settings and website content.
The third tip: Whatever you change, give it some time to work. As an example, let's say you change a setting in a cache plugin. It will need some time to see its effect on your live website. So, changing and then checking your website immediately might not show the actual results. In addition to this, preferably don't change many settings at the same time. If a setting disrupts your web pages, it will be hard to find which one caused it. I also experienced this myself.
As for the action to take today to see some improvement? SEO is not a simple one-step action "thing." All actions together will result in improvements, increased domain authority, and website ranking. So give it time, have an SEO strategy, and take it step by step.
